Watermelon, the fruit that is really a Vegetable. Watermelon can be traced back to Africa and is part of the cucumber and squash family. Early watermelons were mainly rind and seeds. Today's varieties are larger, the flesh sweeter, the seeds smaller and the rind thinner. It is perhaps the most refreshing, thirst quenching fruit of all. Watermelon consists of 92% water and 8% sugar.
Square watermelons were the invention of a Japanese man to better accommodate the small spaces in Japan and allow the watermelon to fit securely in your refrigerator.
Now, Toshimichi Boui has successfully created pyramid-shaped watermelons. Boui said that he would like to grow melons shaped like gourds and bottles in one year’s time. However, these melons are not as good as the original in terms of flavor as they are not able to fully mature. So it is better to taste them with your eyes instead!
